Frequently asked questions

During my time as an instructor, here are the most popular and frequent questions asked by customers regarding the driving test.

Do examiners have a quota of learners to pass each day or week?
No. If you are good enough, the examiner will pass you.

Can I be guaranteed a first time pass?
No, unfortunately not. Be wary of any company offering this as it is impossible to guarantee a first time pass. This is because tests can only be conducted by Driving Standards Agency examiners who assess each candidate individually. Guaranteed pass schemes are an advertising gimmick and usually mean that the company offering it will agree to pay for a retest if you are unsuccessful on your first attempt.

Will the examiner fail me immediately and tell me to drive back to the test centre if I commit a serious fault at the start of my test?
No. The examiner will carry on until the end of the test. However, if a pattern of dangerous driving is displayed, the examiner will terminate the test in the interests of public safety and fail you.

Will I fail if I cross my hands on the steering wheel?
Possibly yes. The examiner will expect you to use the “push and pull” method of steering. This is the safest and best technique as your hands have more contact with the steering wheel.

Is it easier to pass the test in an automatic car than a manual car?
No. Although it is easier to learn to drive an automatic car, exactly the same standard of driving is required to pass the test.

If I pass the test in an automatic car, am I permitted to drive a manual car?

No. If you pass the test in an automatic you will only be allowed to drive an automatic car.

Will I fail if I go over the speed limit?
The examiner will give you a short period of time (normally a few seconds) to correct your speed. However, if you fail to notice you are breaking the speed limit or are driving at excessive speeds, the examiner will fail you.

Will the examiner fail me if I stall the engine?
No, not necessarily. If you stall remain calm and composed, apply the handbrake and select neutral before restarting the engine. However, if you were to stall and create danger to other road users (e.g. in the middle of a busy road junction) or stalled continually then the examiner would almost certainly fail you.

Am I permitted to cut corners in my driving test?
Don’t cut corners unless completely safe and absolutely necessary.

Do I have to turn the car round in three movements when carrying out the turn in the road exercise? Not necessarily. The amount of turns you take depends on the width of the road, length and turning circle of the car. Keeping the car under slow speed control, observing all around and steering briskly are of utmost importance.

Will I fail the test if I hit the kerb during a reversing maneuver? You will only fail the test if you lose control of the vehicle or fail to show good all round observation throughout the maneuver. The examiner will allow you to pull forward and correct your positioning.

What happens if my car breaks down during the driving test? The examiner will give you a couple of minutes to try and rectify the fault. If unable to do this, the test will be terminated and the examiner will return to the test centre. If this happens then you should stay with your vehicle if safe, and wait for your instructor to arrive.

Will I fail my test if I change from fourth gear straight into second gear? No. Any gear changing method is correct if properly executed.

What would the examiner do if a learner drove in a dangerous manner during the test? The examiner may abandon the test in the interest of public safety.
